Besides cleansing and moisturising, exfoliation is another important step towards the healthy skin. It includes removal of the dead skin cells on its surface, which makes it look luminous and healthy. However, there are certain things you must know about this process. Even though it is considered to be harmless, it can be very harsh to your skin if done improperly. Here are some basic tips on exfoliation you have to know.
As we age, the process of regeneration slows down when old cells start to pile up on the surface. That makes your skin looks dull, dry and rough. Also, this can lead to clogged pores, excess oil, blemishes and acne. Proper exfoliation removes these dead cells and uncovers the new ones below. Moisturising products penetrate deeply into your skin this way, which makes them much more effective. This routine will definitely leave your skin looking fresh and healthy. However, if done inappropriately, it can lead to much worse things, such as broken blood vessels.
Which Products to Choose?
Exfoliating cleansers that contain sea salt are amazing. Just choose the one with regular, round grains, because exfoliating with square or irregular ones can cause skin lacerations. Such abrasions may not be visible to the human eye, but they can really cause serious damage to your body. Also, homemade exfoliating scrubs are great for numerous reasons. They are much cheaper than the ones you buy in the store, plus the fact that you control its ingredients. For example, coffee is fantastic natural exfoliant which boosts collagen production. One tablespoon of ground coffee combined with another one of olive oil makes an inexpensive face scrub that serves as a skin simulant. These exfoliants are really amazing, but their counterparts in cosmetic surgery are even more fabulous. Cosmetic procedure such as fraxel laser treatment is the most fantastic thing you can get – it will not destroy the surface of your skin. Instead, it is targeted to enlarged pores and makes tiny thermal zones that stimulate the production of collagen. It is basically like a real-life Instagram filter.
When Should You Exfoliate? – Morning Vs. Night
Even though some people claim that is much better to exfoliate in the morning, since that will allow your makeup to sit better, some other people think that it would be much better to do it at night – because skin care is supposed to take place then. The truth is that even expert cannot agree on the topic. Basically, they say that it is dependent on someone’s personal habits and lifestyle. If your face is very dull in the morning, you should exfoliate when you get up. That would solve the problem of the excess oil and clogged pores. On the other hand, if you wear makeup on a daily basis, it would be the best to do that at night, in order to remove remaining makeup particles from your skin before going to bed.
How Often to Do It?
Even though exfoliating during cold winter days seems harmless, doing it too often can get your skin irritated, dry and flaky. Three times a week will be just fine – less is more in this case. Overdoing it can create tiny cracks in your skin that can lead to inflammation and loss of hydration. You may think that you are solving a problem, but you are actually making it even worse. On the other hand, if you do become a victim of excessive sloughing – don’t worry. Products that contain green-tea extract will calm your skin complexion once it is red.
Proper exfoliation is definitely the key to success when it comes to healthy and radiant skin. It is not just about the products you use – but also how often you do it. Your skin need time to recuperate, so have that in mind the next time you decide to repeat the process.
